Long-time fans of this blog may know that I'm on an ongoing (and frankly thankless) mission to see every film in the IMDb Top 250. I say thankless on account of the fact that the list is constantly changing - I could see 10 films from the list in a month, and within the same amount of time a small majority of them could have slipped out.
In this course of thinking about this, I had another thought about giving more attention to the British films I've reviewed (which are typically tagged 'Brit Pick' if they're any good). And then I hit upon an idea: as well as doing the IMDb Top 250, why not chart my progress through the BFI Top 100 as well?
For those who don't you, the BFI is the British Film Institute. Amongst other things they run a film festival in London every year and manage a national archive of British films, often restoring and re-releasing old classics or forgotten films. In 1999 they published their list of the 100 Best British films, voted for by members of the public, which can be read in full here.
Up 'til now I've been doing an IMDb update every three months, but to give myself an extra incentive to see as many films on the list as possible, I'll be updating on my progress through both lists every two months. In other words, every even-numbered month (February, April, June etc.) you'll get an update on the IMDb Top 250, and every odd-number month (starting in January, then March, May etc.) you'll get an idea of how I'm doing on the BFI Top 100.
As with the IMDb list, I'll post links to reviews of all the ones I've seen, highlighting as I
go along the ones I need to see again before I review them. The ones in
blue are one I need to see again, while the ones in red are those which
scored less than 3/5 and therefore, in my humble opinion, don't really
deserve to be there. As things stand, I've currently seen 37 out of the BFI Top 100.
So, without further ado...
